The boxes arrive on a Tuesday. The crew carries them up, stacks them flat in the room they are destined for, and then does something that surprises most clients. They leave.
For the next 48 hours the floor does nothing at all. It sits in its boxes while the air conditioning hums and the apartment goes about its normal life around it. Somewhere in that quiet gap, a perfectly reasonable question usually arrives by WhatsApp: we are ready, the floor is here, why is nobody fitting it?
Because the floor is working. It just does not look like it.
Materials move house badly
Every flooring material responds to the conditions around it. Engineered oak takes on and gives up moisture with the air, the way all real timber does. A rigid SPC board barely notices humidity, but it does notice temperature, and its core expands a little as it warms and settles back as it cools. Neither behaviour is a defect. It is simply what the materials are, and a good fit works with it rather than pretending it away.
The trouble is where a plank has just come from. It has been sitting in a warehouse, then in a delivery van, then briefly in a corridor, and each of those places has its own temperature and its own air. The plank arrives at your door in one state while the room is living in another. Give it no time to adjust, lock it together straight off the van, and the floor finishes its settling after it has been fitted. Timber that dries out once the joints are closed pulls apart and shows gaps. Boards that went down warm and then cooled contract as one locked surface. The fit was precise on the day. The material just had not finished arriving.
What the 48 hours actually does
Acclimatisation is nothing more sophisticated than letting the floor and the room reach an agreement. The boxes rest in the room where the planks will be fitted, with the air conditioning running the way you actually live, and the material drifts to the temperature and moisture level it will spend the next decade at. By the time the first plank clicks in, its moving is already done.
The pause earns its keep twice over, because those same 2 days give the slower checks room to breathe. Moisture readings on a concrete slab cannot be rushed either, and we have written before about why the subfloor deserves more attention than it ever gets in the photographs. A floor fitted on the right schedule is usually a floor fitted on a properly tested base, because nobody was hurrying either job.
Why it matters more here
In a mild climate the journey from warehouse to living room is a short one, in every sense. In Dubai the distances are wider. A delivery van in July is one world and an air conditioned apartment at 22 degrees is another, and the plank crosses between them in an afternoon. The wider that gap, the further the material has to travel before it settles, and the more it matters that the travelling happens before fitting rather than after.
This is the same physics that decides which materials belong here at all. It is why solid timber struggles in this climate and why engineered oak stays flat where solid oak warps, with its cross laminated core built to resist exactly this kind of movement. Construction does most of the work. The 48 hours of rest is the courtesy that lets even a well built board start its life in your home at its true size.

Two days can feel like a delay when all you want is the room back. In practice it is the cheapest insurance in the entire job. It costs nothing, it needs nobody on site, and it prevents the sort of problems that only show up months later, when the van and the invoice are long gone. The best work in this trade often looks like nothing happening. This is 48 hours of it.
